The Ask
GIZ Rwanda was working on a machine translation solution to help solve some of the problems experienced by people in Rwanda for English-Kinyarwanda (and vice versa) translation challenges. Made by People was tasked to help GIZ to identify, prototype, and test possible use cases using Human Centered Design.
The Observation
Despite Rwanda having few languages in the country compared to other East African countries, there are a lot of communication challenges especially between English Speaking and Kinyarwanda speaking users. These challenges cut across many sectors such as education, tourism, health and agriculture.
The Process
- Use case identification - this was the first stage that brought together different stakeholders from diverse sectors to identify the most viable use cases. The selected use cases were taken through a design thinking process for refinement and user identification.
- Process Mapping - The use cases identified were mapped and users' pain points and or motivations were identified.
- Wireframing - The user journeys were then converted to high-fidelity mockups which stakeholders could interact with.
- Prototyping- the high-fidelity designs were converted into prototypes that were tested with potential users of the use cases. This provided feedback that guided the iterations of the use cases to better meet the needs and wants of the target users.
Outcomes
We were able to deliver tested prototypes for the selected use cases that moved into production.
